Ever Wondered How To Change Your Life?

Ever Wondered How To Change Your Life?

I have many people ask me,“How can I change my life?”

If you have wondered how to change your life don’t worry, it’s a pretty common thing for people to ask themselves when they find themselves in a place of discomfort.

First I try to help them understand this statement.

When someone says “You’ve Changed” It simply means you’ve stopped living your life their way.

Who are you living your life for?

That might sound like a crazy question to ask but I think in reality many of us are living our life to receive an affirmation or a blessing from someone.

We all want our life to be validated. We want others to affirm the path we have chosen to follow.

In reality we will never receive the affirmation we desire unless we live our life the way they want us to.

So I come back to my first question, ”Who are you living your life for?”

“I love this quote…”The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide our problems are your own. You do not blame them on anyone or anything. You realize that you control your own destiny.” – Albert Ellis

Ahhh, there’s that word “Destiny.”

What Do We Want Our Life (Destiny) To Be About?

Before we decide to change our life, we better decide what we want our life to be about.

If you had to write down on paper what your life would look like a year, three years, and five years from now, what would write?

Describe the different aspects of your life.

Where would you be living? What type of job would you have? What would you want the focus of your life to be?

I watched the movie “Sea Biscuit” again the other night. One of my favorite scenes is near the beginning where the horse trainer is searching for one horse that he can groom into a champion.

He wasn’t looking for a horse that was already a champion but he was looking for a horse that had the heart of a champion.

It was a dark, foggy night as Sea Biscuit and the trainer look into each other’s eyes for the first time.

The trainer looked into Sea Biscuit’s eyes and was able to see into his heart. He saw the heart of a champion even though Sea Biscuit had been beaten down and tossed aside by all the other trainers.

He saw the potential in the horse that was labeled as lazy, incorrigible.

He chose not to give up on Sea Biscuit but to be patient with him, work with him, and establish a relationship with Sea Biscuit that brought out the champion in the horse.

He did this because he could see Sea Biscuit’s heart and he knew that he had the heart of a champion.

I want you to know you have the heart of a champion.

God didn’t make no junk! (forgive my grammar)

I have called you by name You are mine… You are precious in my sight, and I love you (Isaiah  43:1-4)

Not Sure How To Turn Your Life Around?

Sometimes we are not sure what we want to be when we grow up?

“Tell me to what you pay attention to, and I will tell you who you are.” -José Ortega y Gasset

What do you invest your time and money on?

If you don’t like the way your life is panning out then here are some steps to change your life.

1.  Examine what you want to change and why?

2. What has stopped you from making those changes?

3. What will your life look like after you make those changes?

Let’s look at the first step…

Many people go through life in a re-active way rather than a pro-active way.

They are so focused on their day to day tasks that they don’t take time for self reflection. They just re-act to life as it comes to them.

If we can be pro-active we will create the life we desire.

To be pro-active we need to be introspective about our life.

Introspective means; examining one’s own thoughts and feelings.

Some of us have a hard time being introspective.

If you are one of those types of people, find someone you trust and let them give you some feedback about your life. Ask them some of the questions you have been asking yourself. Listen to their response and see if it rings true-

Write these things down so they get elevated into your consciousness.

Second Step…

Look at the reasons you have not made these changes before. My hunch is you have had these desires to make these changes and maybe even tried to implement them.

Be honest with yourself. You say you want to change but are you willing to give the effort that it will take to really make the changes come into reality?

When I smoked I often told myself I wanted to quit. I even tried at times but when I GOT honest with myself, I didn’t want to put the effort that it would take to quit.

I finally stopped smoking when I got someone to help me. I needed an accountability partner who helped encouraged me when I got frustrated and wanted to go back to smoking

Third Step…

As you begin to make the changes in your life, do you have a picture of what you life will be after you make those changes?

If you can find a photograph that captures your change, put it on the mirror in your bathroom.  This way you can be reminded of what your future will look like after the change is implemented.

Have a picture in your mind that you can visualize as you go through your every day task.

Change Your Life For The Better Starting Now!

Remember this-

Watch your thoughts; they become your words.

Watch your words; they become your actions.

Watch your actions; they become your habits.

Watch your habits; they become your character.

Watch your character for it will become your destiny.
