Finding Friendship in Imalone Wisconsin

High atop a office building in Manhattan is a sign which points the way to Imalone Wisconsin…934 miles essentially northeast from Manhattan. The story goes it was a lighthearted moment of the billboard advertising company that had a break between businesses that wanted to use the sign so they found an interesting name for a town and figured the distance and it was so popular they didn’t take it down. Yes Imalone is recognized by Map Quest proof that it truly exists. Where did the name come from? A fellow named snowball ANDERSON built a gas station many years ago in this logging region. One day he was out of town and left the business in the care of an old timer named Bill Granger. A salesman came by and needed and invoice signed and the name of the place filled in. Bill just shrugged his shoulders and said ”I’m alone” meaning there was no one to ask . the salesman wrote “I’m a lone and name the area . There are times we all feel alone- certainly Paul did. 2 Timothy 4:16-18 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.  But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth. The reference to Paul’s first Roman trial and imprisonment (Acts 28), which resulted in the apostle’s release (2 Tim 4:17), subsequent mission work including his work in Crete and...

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner ?

I’ll never forget the Wednesday afternoon in the spring of 1990 when I went home and told Diane, my wife “Guess who’s coming to dinner?” I had just completed arrangements for a prominent Rabbi from the Jewish community, the Presidents of the Bahai and Muslim faith communities of Greater Indianapolis to come to a dinner at our house. Diane gasped with a look of fear in her eyes “what will I cook that everyone can eat?” “Oh you’re a great cook you’ll figure something out,”I replied. “Now remember, Dr. Athar from the Muslim community comes out of the Sunni tradition and his food needs to be kosher, his wife comes out of the Shiite tradition and cannot eat any fish with a blood vein. Rabbi Boxman and his wife cannot eat any food that is not kosher and the President of the Baha’i community and his wife are vegetarians. I know that you’ll figure something for us to eat that will be great! You know that this is the first time that representatives from these four different faith communities have ever been together for a meal! Isn’t that wonderful?” There are many actions that we live out in life that have a ripple effect .It is not until much later that we see the good or the bad consequences of our actions. In Isaiah 2:2-4 the prophet Isaiah looked into the future. He told the people of Judah how God would judge between the nations and they would beat their tools of war and destruction into instruments of farming and life. In verse 4, Isaiah says “Nations shall not...
Star Trek Wisdom in Living Life to the Fullest

Star Trek Wisdom in Living Life to the Fullest

“To boldly go where no man has gone before?” If you want to go to a place no one has gone before, you want to make sure you have a good captain. You know your captain is a little shaky when… …your shuttlecraft has been up on blocks for over a month …you have a shuttle called “Billy Joe Bob” …he refers to Photon Torpedoes as “Popguns” …he installs a set of bullhorns on the front of the saucer section …he says “Got your ears on, good buddy” instead of “open hailing frequencies” …he hangs fuzzy dice over the view screen …he says “Yee-Ha!” instead of “Engage” …he insists on calling his executive officer “Bubba” …he programs the food replicator for beer, ribs, and turnip greens I love the Star Trek theme “Seek out new life and new civilizations.” There is a innate desire in us to discover something new. What Stops You From Living Life to the Fullest? Comfortableness? You want to experience something new in life but it just takes too much work? It has been said that nobody makes changes unless the pain is enough to force oneself to make the change. Have you had this desire for a change but things are just too comfortable where you are right now? Here Are Two Suggestions 1. Benefits   If you’re feeling too comfortable, than you have to grasp the positive benefits you will receive in taking this new step into your future. You will have to reinforce over and over in your mind the reasons you want to take this next step, even if it is...
Decisions Shape Our Destiny to Get More Out of Life

Decisions Shape Our Destiny to Get More Out of Life

A lady walks into a drug store and tells the pharmacist she needs some cyanide. The pharmacist said, “Why in the world do you need cyanide? The lady then explained she needed it to poison her husband. The pharmacist’s eyes got big and he said, “Lord, have mercy — I can’t give you cyanide to kill your husband! That’s against the law! I’ll lose my license, they’ll throw both of us in jail and all kinds of bad things will happen! Absolutely not, you can NOT have any cyanide!” The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist’s wife. The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, “Well, now. You didn’t tell me you had a prescription” It is the decisions not the conditions of your life that determine your destiny. Do You Want to Get More Out of Life? In China there is a bamboo tree, when planted, watered and fertilized, doesn’t show any evidence of growth for the first four years. However, in the fifth year, the bamboo tree starts to grow and GROW… .In just 6 weeks that follow, the Chinese bamboo tree will grow as much as 3 feet per day; it continues to grow until more than 90 feet in height. Now, did the bamboo tree grow in six weeks or did it take five years to grow? Our life is often like the bamboo tree. It can be very discouraging if we don’t see the results we want after working hard. But, this is the key in making decisions that will shape our destiny. There...
Don’t Take Things Personally to Get More Out of Life

Don’t Take Things Personally to Get More Out of Life

Several years ago, a friend boarded and kept an umbrella cockatoo in his home. The umbrella cockatoo always had pink lipstick marks on the white feathers of his forehead from his doting human’s kisses…. There was no question in the my friend’s mind that this bird was totally adored. Then one day, the owner’s husband phoned to ask my friend to help find a home for the bird. He was stunned, then realized the sound he could  hear was the owner sobbing in the background. The husband explained briefly that the parrot — for the first time in the many years the owner had him — had just bitten his mistress. He said she was so upset because she felt the bite was proof the bird didn’t love her anymore. My friend tried valiantly to get her to talk to him, to explain that these things happen, and to not get rid of a beloved pet of many years just because of one incident…. But she was too upset to even talk to my friend. The husband promised to give her my message and to ask her to call me when she calmed down. I never heard from her again. When you take things personally, you feel offended, and your reaction is to defend your beliefs and create conflicts. Do you take too personally what people say to you? Do you feel offended by remarks, actions or behavior of other people? Do you take every minor event too seriously, letting it limit or frighten you?   Did you know that quite often the offense is not real, and the...
The Power of Your Word in Discovering Yourself

The Power of Your Word in Discovering Yourself

A man had told half-truths about the local rabbi that, overcome by remorse, he begged the rabbi to forgive him. “And, Rabbi, tell me how I can make amends.” The rabbi sighed,”Take two pillows, go to the public square and there cut the pillows open. Wave them in the air. Then come back.” The man quickly went home, got two pillows and a knife, hastened to the square, cut the pillows open, waved them in the air and hastened back to the rabbi’s chambers. “I did just what you said, Rabbi!” “Good.” The rabbi smiled. “Now, to realize how much harm is done by gossip, go back to the square…” “And?” Asked the man. “And collect all your feathers.”The Rabbi replied. Your Word Has the Power to Bring Passion or Poison Very simply the power of your word is to use your Word in the direction of love and truth Your Word (upper case) has to do with the power you have to create through every kind of expression you make. You create through multiple types of expression including emotions, attitude, actions, what you refrain from, and what you express your faith in. The word is a force; it is the power you have to communicate, to think, and thereby to create the events in your life.  The word is the most powerful tool you have, but like a sword with two edges, your word can create the most beautiful dream or your word can destroy everything around you.  One edge of the sword is the misuse of the word, which creates a living hell.  The other edge is the...
The Key to Self Improvement

The Key to Self Improvement

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed” The mind is so full of many thoughts. For a long time I fed the thoughts of self-doubt, fear, guilt, and envy. You guessed it, I realized I was feeding the wrong wolf. I just returned from Teotihuacán, northeast of Mexico City. I went to study the Toltec Indians and their understanding of self-improvement. The Aztecs respected the Toltecs as “men of knowledge,” and rewrote some of their own history to show they were related to the Toltecs. The word Toltec is said to come from the Nahuatl language of that area, and means “master builder” or “artist. They speak about the voice in our head that wants to tear us down as the ‘predator.” Part of their spiritual journey was to be in touch with the divine power within that would become so strong that the predator would leave. I went with a group of seekers for a week. My...

Will Tomorrow Be Too Late to Get More Out of Life?

Will Tomorrow Be Too Late to Get More Out of Life?

Have you ever wondered what you would change in your life if you found out you had only 10 years to live? Do you know the song “One Day to Late “by Skillet? Here are some of the powerful lyrics to the song     Tick tock, hear the clock count down, Wish the minute hand could be rewound; So much to do, and so much I need to say, Will tomorrow be too late? Time passes by, Never thought I’d wind up, One step behind; Now I’ve made my mind up… Today, I’m gonna try a little harder; Gonna make every minute last longer; Gonna learn to forgive and forget, ‘Cause we don’t have long, gonna make the most of it; Today, I’m gonna love my enemies; Reach out to somebody who needs me; Make a change, make the world a better place, ‘Cause tomorrow could be one day too late… One day too late… One day too late… Do you find yourself putting things off that you really want to do today? The words from this song are thought provoking. Gonna learn to forgive and forget, Cause we don’t have long, gonna make the most of it; Cause tomorrow could be one day too late… Time Comes Whether We’re Ready or Not We all find excuses for putting off things that are important to us.We get bogged down with every day tasks. They always say the “squeaky wheel gets the oil.” We can easily lose focus on what is really important and find ourselves giving our energy to things that squeak the loudest. Sometimes just because a...
I’mpossible to Make a Change in Your Life

I’mpossible to Make a Change in Your Life

Notice if you put a small ‘ in the word IMPOSSIBLE  it becomes I’M POSSIBLE. With one little change the idea of something being impossible all of the sudden is possible. That is the way in most things that we think are impossible. If we can shift or add one little element, things change and we see a new possibility. Helen Keller lived in a world of silence and of physical darkness. Many people pitied her because she did not have the full enjoyment of her bodily senses as they did. But she said, “It is because they do not see the golden chamber in my life where I dwell delighted; for dark as my path may seem to them, I carry a magic light in my heart.” She said, “Faith, the spiritual strong searchlight, illumines the way, and although sinister doubts lurk in the shadow, I walk unafraid toward the Enchanted Wood where the foliage is always green, where joy abides, where nightingales nest and sing, and where life and death are one in the Presence of the Lord.” Mountains of envy, despondency, and self-pity are in jeopardy when that kind of faith is around. Faith that gives one the joy of expectancy is a mighty faith. And yet one cannot expect that every mountain will be removed from his or her life or from the world. Some will remain regardless of faith’s might. But even these may cease to be obstacles to abundant living if one has a faith in a greater power that can guide us. George A. Buttrick asks, “What is faith?” and then answers,...
